Smiling & Happiness StatisticsDr. Suzanne Stock and her team are proud to provide expert orthodontic treatment to patients in and around Fairfield, Washington, Williamsburg, and Iowa City. We believe that a new smile is about more than just improving your appearance: having a smile you’re proud to show off improves your confidence, your self-esteem, and your happiness overall. As it turns out, we’re not alone in this belief. In fact, don’t take our word for it—check out the science behind it!

How Smiling Makes You Happier and Healthier

Study after study confirms that smiling is not only a sign of happiness, but potentially a cause of happiness as well. It’s one of the most basic human physiological responses: babies smile while still in the womb, and even blind babies will smile in response to the human voice. Children may smile as many as 400 times every day!

Smiling also has a direct effect on happiness. It turns out that smiling stimulates our brains more than eating a bar of chocolate, and studies have shown that smiling is associated with reducing the stress hormone cortisol, lowering blood pressure, and releasing the mood-boosting hormone endorphin. It’s true: smiling makes you happier!

Smiling can make you healthier as well. A 30-year longitudinal study found that how much someone smiled in a yearbook photo was a strong predictor of how fulfilling and long-lasting their marriage would be, how they would do on standardized tests, and how they scored on general well-being and happiness tests. Another study even found a link between the smiles on Major League Baseball cards and the lifespan of the player!
